We 're starting the week on a super sweet note, and giving you not one, but THREE nautical cake decorating ideas using sugar paste fondant - courtesy of our resident cake designer extraordinaire, Tessa Lindow Huff

Tessa created a trio of cakes for issue 8 of Birds' Party Magazine, based on our Nautical Party Printables, and any (or all three) would be a perfect focal point to your nautical desserts table - Plus they are so easy to decorate too, which is always a bonus in my book! Check out Tessa's step-by-step below:

DIY Nautical Cakes Using Sugar Parte Fondant

1) Make a cake template

For clean, precise cake decorations, use images, graphics, and simple shapes from your invitations or other printables.  Using clean carstock or thin cardboard (I use spare, unused, and flattened pastry boxes) trace or sketch the shapes of the image you’d like to reproduce in fondant.  Cute the shape out of the cardstock.  For these cakes, a template was made for the sailboat as well as a triangle for the bunting.

2) Use your cake template

Lightly dust your work surface with cornstarch and roll out your fondant to about 1/4- 1/8” thick. Place your template on top of the fondant.  Using a sharp craft or paring knife, cut out your design. Try to slice down and not pull the fondant, or the shape may get distorted.  If you find that the template is sticky to the fondant, rub a very small amount of shortening on the back of the template before using.

3) Create fondant ropes

Ropes are one of the cleanest and easiest boarders and decorations to make.  Start by rolling a piece of fondant between your hands to form a snake.  Once you have the rope started, use your fondant smoother to continue rolling.  You will want to use the smoother instead of your hands here.  Hands are bumpy and will make your rope uneven.  Working down the length of your rope, continuing rolling the smoother over the top of the fondant until it reaches the desired length and width.  For this design, this technique was use to create the waves, red bows, and bunting.

4) Utilize baking and cake decorating tools

There are not black and white rules when it comes to making decorations out of fondant.  Many designs are made by getting creative with the tools and shapes that you already have.  Use different sized, round piping tips to create a variety of polka dots.  Lightly dust your work surface with cornstarch and roll out fondant to 1/4- 1/8” thick.  Cut out polka dots with piping tips.  If the fondant stays in the tip, carefully poke it out with a small ball tool or the end of a paintbrush.  This technique was use on the bunting flags.

** Use a small, clean paintbrush to adhere decorations to the cake.  Dampen the brush with water or gum glue.  Less is more here, or the decorations might slide off.
