DIY Ice Cream Stand Awning for Your Party
Styling a tented stand has been on my party bucket list since ever!
You know, the super cute stands complete with the mandatory awning, that you can use for SO many party themes in summer and beyond?!
Like lemonade stands, ice cream stations, drinks stations, circus carnival concession stand...
(You name it, and chances are; you can put an awning on it!)
So for my latest Coca-Cola partnership, I decided to tick it off my list.
In fact, I wanted a specific awning that ticked many boxes:
1) that could be added to any table/support/base to create an instant tented stand for any event.
2) that could be pulled down or disassembled easily for storage, and without damaging the table/support/base.
3) that was easily transportable
4) NO sewing involved
5) and nothing expensive or that required many hours of labor either.
And after a few sketches and brain storming sessions, I decide to use foam board.
Here's how I made my awning that ticked ALL the above boxes ;)
Easy DIY Ice Cream Stand Awning
Materials needed:
* A table/base/support that you can screw into - I used my trusty wooden garden table
* White sheet of foam board to fit the width of your table
* Acrylic paint in your choice of colors - I used yellow, blue and pink to match my party + white for the supporting rods
* Masking or painter's tape
* Foam brush or roller
* Ruler and pencil
* X-acto knife and cutting mat
* 2 Dowel rods, about 1 inch thick
* A saw
* 4 screws + an electric screw driver
1) Using a round plate or object, trace the awning scallops along one edge of the foam board with pencil.
2) Mark the awning lines at equal distances from one edge of the board to the other, using ruler and pencil to create each stripe.
3) Cut out the scalloped edge using a precision or x-acto knife.
4) Decide what colors go where, and start taping your foam board along the straight lines you did in step 2. This will help you paint each stripe of color neatly.
5) Paint the first stripe of color. Let it dry and repeat if necessary to achieve desired hue or cover any spots you missed with the first coat of paint.
6) Paint other stripes of the same color. Let it dry before proceeding with the next color.
7) Carefully remove tape and paint other stripes of the awning.
8) Paint dowel rods to match your table color. Once dry, saw off the top of the rods at a 45 degree angle to sit below the awning top. Screw the rods to the center of the awning at either ends.
You can paint screws to hide them in the same colors as the awning.
Then screw rods onto your table, and voila!
That does sound easy enough to make! Will have to keep this in mind for the future. I love throwing my grandkids birthday parties, so much fun and they are only kids for a little while!
