Easy DIY Party Skirt Video Tutorial
Sometimes a girl just can't find the right outfit, am I right? Be it for a birthday party, dinner date or Halloween costume...finding that one piece you had in mind to complete your outfit, can sometimes be challenging.
This is where knowing how to whip up a quick and easy elasticated party skirt can save the day!
And for those of you who are "allergic" to sewing (like me, at times...), fear not! It's a reeeeeally simple tutorial, pinky promise ;)
This simple elasticated skirt is quite straight forward to make, and once you make one; you'll probably get addicted and want to turn any piece of fabric into a skirt. I did!
For this DIY project I used some pink gingham fabric I had at home. AND a satiny pink tablecloth I had in my fabric stash. Probably from the era when bright pink satin tablecloths were trendy...(really?!) Anyways, I think it looks so much better re-purposed as a skirt, don't you? ;)
But why stop there?! You can use any fabric you want, any color and even add embellishments to the finished skirt, like tulle on the hem or add another layer of fabric...the possibilities are truly endless my friends!
I made one skirt for myself and one for my little girl, who can't stop twirling in it.
Can you blame her?! :)
So let's get this party skirt started!
Materials:
* fabric of choice (I'd start with cotton as it's the easiest to sew)
* needle and thread or a sewing machine
* 1/2 inch or 1 inch elastic
* scissors
* measuring tape
* large safety pin
1) Measure the width, which is your waist measurement x2. Then measure the length you want (mine was 45 cm or 18 inches) + 8 cm (3.5 inches) for the hems.
2) Using your waist and length measurements from step one above, cut 2 rectangles of fabric (waist x length).
Example:
For a waist of 70 cm with a length of 45 cm, you cut two rectangles of fabric measuring:
width (70 x 2) = 140
by
length (45 + 8) = 52
3) Place the rectangles of fabric together, pattern side with pattern side. Then on the wrong or reverse side of the fabric, sew one of the shorter ends together with a running stitch. Sew a zigzag stitch along the edges to stop fraying.
4) Hem one of the longer sides of the rectangle. This is the bottom of the skirt.
5) Then repeat step three above to sew together the other two shorter sides.
6) Measure how much elastic you need around your waist, and add an extra 2 cm (1 inches), then cut. Place elastic on the other long side (the side that's not hemmed) and fold the fabric over to encase it completely. Pin and place and remove the elastic before sewing. This is the skirt waist.
7) Sew along the edge to make a gap for the elastic to pass through. Leave an opening so you can insert the elastic through.
8) Using a safety pin, pass the elastic through the gap, until it comes out the other end. Try the skirt one for size and adjust the elastic if needed.
9) Sew the elastic together with a cross and reverse stitches to secure in place. Close the opening of the elasticated waist with a running stitch.
10) Try your new skirt on and twirl away! :)
