Balloon Heart Backdrop DIY 🎈💖
This year, for the first time ever, I decided to decorate my studio mantel for Valentine's Day!
For the wall above the mantel, I had the idea to make a large balloon heart structure that would also double as a photo-booth backdrop.
These balloon structures have been trending on the party scene and Pinterest for a few years, and this was the perfect opportunity to have a go at making my own!
Balloon Heart Backdrop DIY
To create the main frame or heart structure for this balloon backdrop, I used a large piece of white foam board that I already had at home from a previous party.
This allowed me to test out my ideas for the project, without the fear of ruining expensive supplies!
For the template, I free-handed one half of the heart out of cardboard and used it as my template. I basically flipped it over to draw the other side of the heart onto the foam board. You'll see how in the video below!

But after making it, I realized that regular cardboard would work just as well. So use that if you prefer, or if you are on a tighter budget.
But if you want to use foam board (which is easier to paint and cut), a large sheet shouldn't cost more than $10, so it's still a viable option for any party.
I am SO glad I decided to make this balloon heart backdrop for my Valentine's Day decor! It's one of my favorite DIY projects to date, and it truly packs the wow factor for any party without much effort or cost!
This balloon heart backdrop was also a lot easier and quicker to make than you might think! I made it in one afternoon, whilst simultaneously taking photos and shooting the DIY steps too. So really, anyone can have a go, I promise!
For my Valentine's Day balloon heart backdrop, I decided to use red balloons and I painted the heart structure pink for contrast. Red and pink are quintessential Valentine's Day colors, but feel free to use whatever colors suit your party or decor.
Come to think of it, this balloon heart backdrop would also be great as decor for a bridal shower or for a wedding photo-booth too, right? 😍
The paint is an optional step, but I feel it really helps to hide a multitude of sins, especially if you're using recycled foam board like I am, or if you're using cardboard to make your heart structure.
The same technique I used to make this balloon heart backdrop can also be used to create other large balloon frames or shapes to suit any theme or event!
But if you don't fancy making your own templates like I did, then check out The Creative Heart Studio, who's probably the pioneer for these types of decor. She sells numerous templates to cater for any occasion!
