DIY Knitted Air Dry Clay Vases

There's no better way to kick off the new year in my opinion, than with some good DIY projects, especially when it involves such a therapeutic craft such as pottery or working with clay. 

Bonus points for doing some recycling in the process, or what I like to call, turning trash into beautiful treasure for your home! 😉

I come from a very crafty family on my father's side. Both my dad and paternal grandfather were always creating and making things with their hands. And my dad in particular, loved sculpting and using clay to create the most amazing statues and figurines. 

I didn't inherit his talents for sculptures, but I love the tactile nature of clay and working to create a unique piece of artwork or décor for my home.

I don't mind that my clay pieces are not 100% perfect, and in fact, I think it adds to the charm of the whole thing.

I'm also not very patient, this is why working with clay is so therapeutic for me, and helps to calm me down, which is always a good thing at the start of any new year! 😁

This is why I chose to make these knitted style clay vases using air dry clay. The air dry clay is super easy to work with, versus polymer clay that you need to bake for instance.

Plus, the knitted style of the clay vases allows for a super pretty finish without too many intricate or fine details that would make this project too complicated for an impatient (or novice) person like me.

So this project is perfect also for kids or beginners, not to mention super inexpensive, since the clay costs very little and we're recycling some old metal cans to transform them into pretty vases for the home!

The only thing I need to point out is that if you embark on this project, is that you have to ensure that you leave enough time to complete it in one sitting, since we're working with air dry clay. This is not one of those project that you can start and stop. You have to start and see it through until the end.

I suggest you leave at least a couple of hours, so a nice relaxing weekend afternoon should do it. I play some music or listen to a nice, relaxing podcast while crafting to make the whole experience even more enjoyable! 👍

Of course, the bigger the vase, the longer it will take you to finish the project, so bear that in mind too. 

Apart from that, my only other tip would be to keep your air dry clay well hydrated inside a wet plastic wrap while you work. This will prevent the clay from drying out. You can see it in more details how I do this in the video where I show you.
