DIY Chunky Rings and Plastic Jewelry with Moldable Plastic
This post is sponsored by InstaMorph® but all opinions are my own.
Spring has finally sprung, and my daughter and I embarked on our first crafting session of the season creating some super adorable DIY moldable plastic chunky rings and jewelry inspired by seasonal blooms and pretty pastel colors!
My daughter is currently obsessed with the trending chunky ring craze, so it was a no-brainer when we discovered InstaMorph® moldable plastic!

You guys already know how much I love to craft with my kids and this craft medium is truly one of the most fun and versatile craft materials I've come across in a while. It’s perfect for an array of family craft projects! Let's just say that I'm now hooked as much as my daughter! 😁
InstaMorph® moldable plastic is a thermoplastic, which means you use heat to mold the plastic into pretty much anything you like!
This time, we decided to make plastic jewelry with the cute flowers and plastic pieces, but you could easily turn them into hair accessories, keyrings, custom school supplies, trendy buttons to customize jackets, gems and add-ons for your card-making crafts and SO much more! 😍
The product comes in small round plastic pellets that you place in a bowl of hot water for a few seconds until they become transparent. Then, using your hands, you simply shape the plastic to craft and create whatever you like! You can also use a mold to achieve the shape you desire.
The plastic sets hard and turns an opaque white within a few minutes at ambient temperature, which is the perfect blank canvas support for any paint or painting technique. The finished plastic can then be painted with acrylic paints, varnished and even glittered, so the possibilities are truly endless!
If you make a mistake, or if the plastic starts to harden and becomes a little difficult to manipulate while you're working on your craft, you simply return your piece to the bowl of hot water to start again or make it more flexible so you can re-work it. So even if you make a mistake, you waste nothing!
Because of the hot water, I suggest adult supervision at all times when crafting.
I have also tested molding the plastic using a heat gun, which worked great! But for safety reasons, that craft project will be for a later date when I'm crafting solo and have no kids around.😉
My daughter and I used a combination of flexible fondant molds that I had at home to make flowers and bracelets to create some of her jewelry. We also fashioned the chunky rings themselves by hand as well as making some animal motif rings, which turned out SO adorable! 😍
If you don't have plastic molds, you can use household items as molds too like bottle caps, lid jars, cups, or the handle of a wooden spoon or rolling pin for example.
The idea is to create custom plastic jewelry to fit your child's fingers and wrists, so find anything that fits the diameter and you're good to go!
When the plastic was set hard, we then painted the pieces using acrylic paint and acrylic paint pens to draw on the chunky ring animal faces.
To finish off the bracelets, we hot glued some flowers to the front and leaves on one of them. But I recommend using a combination of hot glue and stronger glue for a more durable result.
To ensure the paint lasts and doesn't chip, you can apply a coat of clear varnish spray paint once all your pieces are assembled and the acrylic paint is dry.

To summarize, InstaMorph® is SO easy to work with, not to mention very affordable, extremely forgiving (since you can reheat and remold again and again if you make a mistake), you can shape it into pretty much anything you like, paint it with an array of paints and mediums, it's extremely durable once set, so suffice to say; you'll be seeing many more moldable plastic crafts around here from now on! 👍🥰
