How To Make a Unicorn Birthday Cake

How To Make a Unicorn Birthday Cake - step-by-step tutorial recipe to make a stunning, trendy unicorn cake for your child's birthday - It's easier than it looks! by BirdsParty.com @birdsparty

You know those super trendy unicorn cakes we see all over Pinterest? Well, I decide I was brave enough to tackle one on my own for my daughter's unicorn themed slumber party.

I love that the cake depicts a unicorn with its eyes closed, and I think it was perfect to evoke the sleepover party aspect and the whole "sweet dreams" idea for us. So sweet, right?! 😍

Check out the full DIY cake tutorial below!

Cake decorating is one of the most fun aspects of baking for me (and the eating...), so I jumped at the chance to make this unicorn cake by transforming a basic white sponge cake.

These unicorn cakes are not that difficult to make, despite them looking so fancy.

You can also vary the colors of the cake decor, but I wen with pink, blue and gold to match the party color palette we chose.

You basically add some fondant and buttercream decorations to any basic white cake and you have yourself a fab, trendy unicorn cake!

What you'll need:

* a round cake, filled and frosted (the cake frosting needs to be quite set and dry for the decor) - basic recipes here
* pink and light blue buttercream frosting - basic recipe here, then simply tint your basic white buttercream with pink and blue food coloring to desired hue
* white sugar paste fondant
* icing (powdered) sugar
* gold food coloring spray or paint
* jet black food coloring pen or black fondant
* tooth picks and wooden BBQ skewers
* piping bag and 1M star tip
* cling film (plastic wrap)
* parchment paper
* edible glitter (optional)

Making the unicorn cake decorations

Directions:

1) Dust your work surface with icing sugar to prevent fondant from sticking. Take a piece of white fondant and shape into a long rope, with a thicker part for the base. Carefully roll the rope on itself to form your unicorn horn.

TIP: Be sure that your fondant is nice and soft before you start working with it, otherwise it may crack.

2) Insert a wooden BBQ skewer in the center and let it dry fully onto parchment paper overnight.

3) Roll out a piece of white fondant and cut out ear shapes. I did it freehand, but you can maybe create a template onto card stock and use that to cut identical ears.

4) Insert a couple of tooth picks into the center of each ear. Cut the insides of the ears out of fondant too, and let all the pieces dry overnight on parchment paper.

5) Once all the parts are completely dry, use your food spray paint to color the inner ear parts and unicorn horn golden. You can also use gold edible paint and a paint brush, but it takes longer to dry. Repeat the coating process with edible paint until you reach the desired hue of gold. Let all pieces dry thoroughly.

6) Using a little water, attach the inner ear parts to the large ear.

Decorating your unicorn cake

Directions:

1) Once fully dry,  carefully insert your unicorn horn and ears into the cake center.

2) Use a black food pen to draw on the eyelids of your unicorn.

TIP: If your frosting is too wet or soft, you could use black fondant and cut out eye lids  instead. Then simply "glue" them to the front of your cake with a little frosting.

3) Take a large piece of cling film (plastic wrap) and add equal amounts of pink and blue frosting side by side in the center.

4) Roll up the cling film on its own and twist the ends to secure the frosting inside for form a "sausage" shape.

5) Pass this "sausage" into a piping bag fitted with your star piping tip. Trim the piping end of the cling film. This will allow you to pipe two frosting colors together to make the unicorn's magical mane!

6) Pipe the unicorn "mane" all around the top to cover the base of the ears and horn, and continue to pipe on one of the sides and front of the cake to create a cascading effect. Add edible glitter on the mane if desired.
