I made these for a summer party shoot I styled a few weeks ago (as you probably saw in my Instagram stories?) and they looked so fab and were so easy to make, that I had to share the DIY tutorial here with you guys!
These custom summer sun hats can be personalized with whatever text and colors you want to suit your party attire or event theme!
Come to think of it, they'd also be super cool for a Kentucky Derby or Ascot event, don't you think?
Of course, you can keep them super simple (like the photo above) with just a custom word or two, OR if you're a 'more is more' kinda gal, you can also go to town pimping them up with accessories like pompoms, tassel and faux flowers galore!
I made two versions, one for myself (can guess which? 😋) and one for my daughter who's also totally in love with making these! And if she (a ten year old) can make them, so can you!
So let's put that hot glue gun to use and get crafting, shall we?!
DIY Custom Summer Sun Hats
Materials:
* pipe cleaners in your choice of colors. You may need several pipes depending on how many letters you want to make. I used black and bright pink.
* scissors
* hot glue
* sun hat(s)
* pompom ribbon
* wooden or colored beads
* tassel
* colored yarn or string to match your pipe cleaners (or not!)
Instructions for pink hat:
1) Start by hot gluing the pompom ribbon to the hat crown (the middle part).
2) Thread some small wooden beads to the colored string.
3) Decide how tall and wide you want he letters to be. Cut pipe cleaners and twist to make each letter.
4) For some of the letters you may be able to twist them using a single piece of pipe cleaner. Alternatively, twist letters together to create a single script word. Or use block letters if you find it easier.
5) Decide where you want the words to be placed on the hat brim. Then add a little hot glue to the back of the first letter of your word and press it down onto the hat for a few seconds until dry.
6) Proceed with each subsequent letter and then your other words in a semi-circular fashion, following the curve on the brim of your hat. Wrap the beaded string around the hat crown and tie it with a knot to secure in place. You're done!
Instructions for black hat:
1) Use the same techniques as for pink hat for creating the pipe cleaner script words.
2) Use black string or cord to tie around the hat crown several times.
3) Use a couple of tassels on either side as embellishments.Ta-dah!
And there you have it! Two awesome, custom summer hats to get you poolside ready in no time! 😉
