If you like easy, modern and art, than this post is for you!
I've been taking a little time off blogging (not sure you noticed...) and one of the things I enjoyed doing during my break, was painting. Hence, these easy DIY modern wall art acrylic paintings!
I'm no professional artist, but I love creating DIY artwork to display in my home (you can see some here, here and here). I think it's far more meaningful than buying art, more pleasurable too and a LOT more affordable! 😉
Easy DIY Modern Wall Art Paintings
I'm currently really enjoying "low-key" décor, calm, minimalist and quite bohemian in style. So naturally, my art work reflected my mood on this occasion.
So, I chose acrylic paints in neutral tones to match the boho vibe I was going for. But of course, you can use the same paint techniques and go to town with your choice of colors to suit your tastes and interiors.
I was heavily inspired by the trendy line art style of painting too, and used acrylic paints and a watercolor Posca pen to create detailing.
Instead of using regular canvases, I opted for wooden boxes, so the art could also be used on shelves or on top of my mantel, which also saved on the headache or trying to hang them!
These wooden boxes were found at my local craft store (same place I got the paints) but you could use any MDF or wood support you fancy too.
I also thought the boxes could be varnished and used as trays at a later date. Not to mention that these boxes were a fraction of the cost of the canvases. Not sure why, but they were.
Painting is such a relaxing, forgiving pastime, I find. If you make a mistake (which I always tend to do...) you can simply go back with a little more paint on top and cover it all up. No biggie!
Having said that, I do suggest making a rough plan or sketch of your designs BEFORE applying any paint to your canvas or support. This will save time, save paint and help you not get frustrated.
For instance, I created my 3 rough designs on the computer and played with the colors a bit until I was happy with the results. It was by no means a rigid plan, but this allowed me to have an idea of how the colors would look together, and where to start applying paint on my canvas. So all I had to do then was follow the designs on my plans!
I did eventually change the colors a bit on the canvas, but the rough plan below allowed me to workout my color palette and position of the line art designs in advance.
To create your own plan, you could simply use paper and some coloring pencils to sketch out your own designs. There are many ideas online of line art drawings, or feel free to create your own!
As for creating the line art part on canvas (the poppies, face and leaves or any other design of your choice) you have three options:
1) go freehand and draw your design directly on the canvas with the watercolor pen;
2) or use a pencil to sketch out your designs on the canvas first, then use the watercolor pen on top (the pencil lines can be easily rubbed out at the end);
3) or print your design, then use carbon paper to draw your chosen lines onto the canvas, and finally use the watercolor pen on top.
Another little tip to help you speed things up a bit, is to use a hair-dryer to dry the paint faster. Otherwise, you'll be waiting for aaaaaages for each layer to dry before painting the next. And ain't nobody got time for that. Even these days!
With this modern line art paint technique you also don't need to be mega precise, and the more little imperfections you have on your final painting, the more organic and freehand it looks, which is the style we're aiming for here (thankfully 😁).
Check out my video below to see how to create all three painting designs.
Hope you like the idea and feel inspired to have a go! If you do, tag me on social media @BirdsParty so I can see and share your creativity! 😍
