DIY Ideas for a Backyard Wedding

Weddings are again on the horizon, but we still have some constraints in place; which means that a backyard, garden or small outdoor space offers the perfect environment in which to host your wedding nuptials in!

Once again,  I was inspired by all the gold, rose and romantic stationery from the craft brand I worked with for this photoshoot, and I styled a modern but romantic drinks and wedding favors station with a rustic flair.

I was aiming for ideas that would look great for any outdoors venue, whether you're hosting your wedding at home in your own backyard or garden or a small venue like a restaurant or pub garden for example.

So the main table consisted of a couple of wine barrels and a wooden upcycled door placed atop the barrels.

I covered this DIY makeshift table with a large piece of burlap and decorated the front with the same type of vine from the indoor wedding table, with the addition of roses on the front for the romantic touch.

This set up could also be easily styled to serve desserts, as a buffet for pies or cakes, as a wedding bar, and so on.

Contrary to last week's indoor wedding dinner table set-up, we already have a lot of greenery and vegetation to act as our table backdrop.

Here you have the option to use what you have available to you to hang decorations from, like lights, paper lanterns, ribbons, wreaths etc.

Because this was meant to be a small wedding set-up, I made the most of it and hung a simple but pretty wooden heart "wreath" on the tree branches. This filled in perfectly the blank space behind the table and was a nod to the romantic, boho style I was aiming for, without much effort at all.

This simple DIY consisted of a wooden heart shape that I painted white and then I added a few faux flowers and eucalyptus branches to the front to decorate it. To hang it on the branches, I used fishing line.

For this drinks station, I added a drinks dispenser to serve the couple's signature cocktail. Of course, you can always add more drink options and provide a range of ready-mixed cocktails and beverages  in pretty dispensers ready for guests to serve themselves.

This is great to avoid high traffic at the bar area, to keep costs more accessible, and is also very practical if you're hosting a smaller wedding for example.

If you're hosting a smaller wedding, alongside the drinks, you can also display your wedding favors or utilize the space to provide a guest book, to display the couple's photos, to display a seating chart or any other wedding must-haves of your choice!

For this outdoor wedding, we served little fruit preserves inside cute jars as the wedding favor idea.

If you're into food, you can totally make your own jams and preserves, or you can do what I did, and decant them into pretty little jars! 😉

To adorn the jam jars, I printed the gift tags using white, pearlescent cardstock and gold embossed it using clear ink gel stamps and gold embossing powder.

Then I punched the bottoms of the tags using a fancy border punch. Then tied both tags with gold twine.

I really wanted to elevate the look of the humble jars, but you could make it as simple as you want to suit your style and budget too.

To display these jars, I used a wooden stand that helped to add height to the display table. This stand was originally wooden, so I painted it white and added a ribbon trim to the front.

To decorate the stand, I placed a bouquet of flowers on top, consisting of hydrangeas, ranunculus and green branches like eucalyptus.

The same sort of arrangement was placed on the foot to the wine barrel table, atop a white wooden crate.

I also added the brown Kraft paper bag favors on the table to give you another idea of wedding favor packaging.

I used all labels and stationery from the brand's collection and superimposed them to create a kind of embossed, raised look and make it more interesting.

For these brown bags, again you can fill them with anything you like, such as candy, chocolate, popcorn, hot chocolate preparations, s'mores kits, etc. to match your wedding theme or style!
