Flowerpot Chocolate Chip Cupcakes with Sugar Paste Flowers
Since we've been sharing some wedding ideas in the last couple of weeks, I thought I'd post these flower pot cupcakes, since they'd be perfect for any wedding or bridal shower you may be planning!
My go-to chocolate chip cupcakes are baked directly in small clay pots, then topped with a simple buttercream tinted green to give the illusion of grass, and crowned with handmade sugar paste edible flowers!
Flowerpot Chocolate Chip Cupcakes with Sugar Paste Flowers
I made these flowerpot cupcakes a while back, but decided to post them now since I thought they'd be ideal for a garden wedding like I said.
But these dainty cupcakes would also look great at any garden party you may be hosting this season, or even a mother's day brunch, birthday tea party or Easter! So be sure to pin the recipe for later too 😉
The sugar paste flowers or roses, are super easy to make and add the perfect finishing touch to these pretty treats!
You can of course vary the colors to suit your own wedding décor and style.
I used sugar paste in red, orange, yellow, lilac and pink, which all had different flavors (strawberry, lemon etc.)
The edible sugar paste flowers can also be made with Marzipan if you prefer. The technique is exactly the same.
You can see also how to decorate a wedding cake using these edible flowers in this post I made for HGTV.
The green leaves are simply done using a fondant cutter that you can buy in any cake shop or online.
The cupcakes themselves can also be made any flavor you like! I used chocolate to emulate the soil, and added chocolate chips for extra crunch and flavor too.
The trick to baking these cupcakes inside a clay or ceramic flowerpot, is to make sure you grease the flowerpots well and add a little lining to cover any holes on the bottom of the pots.
Also, I think it goes without saying, that you must be sure to wash the pots well and use NEW clean pots - this is NOT the occasion to re-purpose an old flower pot! 😁
I found my flowerpots in my local craft store, but you can also get these in any garden center.
The number of cupcakes that this recipe yields will of course depend on the size of pots that you use. I used 6cm or 2 1/2 inch diameter pots - the diameter of the large opening.
To pipe the buttercream "grass" I also used a grass piping tip. I looked online for a technical term, but there isn't one, I don't think. So look for grass piping tip or Wilton #233.
Alternatively, you can simply add the buttercream with a piping bag without tip and "fluff" it up using a fork or something similar.
I'm planning to make these cupcakes again Spring but using a chocolate buttercream to top it with crushed Oreo cookies like in this party! 😍
