DIY Paper Flower Cake Toppers
Paper anything is my jam. But paper flowers are my particular favorites! I mean, you take a fairly simple, banal, flat piece of paper and fashion it into something 3-D, beautiful and super practical. What's not to love?!
And did I mention they're so easy to craft? Yep, despite their intricate looks, they're a cinch to make, and one of those DIYs that even the kids can help with!
My paper flowers obsession really stems back to kindergarten, when we did a play where we were all spring flowers. 😁 The teachers crafted huge crepe paper flowers to adorn our heads and costumes, and I was hooked from then. I still remember it vividly, funnily enough, even after all these years!
From a blogger's point of view, I've been crafting paper flowers ever since I started this blog, waaay before they were all the rage, like you can see in this post I did for HGTV or this one for our British Street Party or even this one for Mother's Day.
And I don't think they'll ever go out of fashion really. And that's mainly because they're so versatile as a decor element. You can also make them whatever size you want to suit your event, party theme or decor needs.
For instance, huge paper flowers make fabulous party backdrops, or you can incorporate them into bridal bouquets, fashion them into gift embellishments (like you probably saw in my Instagram feed or stories?!), or use them as cake topper like we did in this post!
My daughter and I created these pretty blooms a few weeks ago in a mother-daughter, bonding crafty afternoon session. I must say, it was super fun but also mega therapeutic for both of us. We put some music on and crafted away for a whole afternoon. Bliss!
We made three types of flowers: peonies, anemones (or poppies) and ranunculus. All my favorites!
We only used crepe paper is various colors, but again feel free to switch things up to suit your party colors!
PLEASE NOTE: If using hot glue or scissors, adult supervision is always required!
DIY Paper Flower Cake Toppers
Materials:
* crepe paper in your choice of colors for petals
* light and dark green crepe paper for the stems and leaves
* yellow crepe paper for stamen of peonies
* scissors
* hot glue (adult supervision required)
* 1 small bead for the ranunculus and anemones
* green floral tape
Directions for the ranunculus paper flowers:
1) Wrap the bead in light green crepe paper, twisting the paper at the base carefully not to rip the paper, and securing tightly with several layers of floral tape. trim off excess paper just under the floral tape. Don't trim too close to the bead, otherwise the paper will fall off.
2) Fold the light green crepe paper and cut several petal shapes at once. Note the shape of the petals - they're almost the same width on top and base, but doesn't need to be perfect. Slightly open the paper to make the "petals" look more realistic. I do this by pulling the paper apart in the opposite direction of the grooves in the crepe paper.
3) Start hot gluing the light green petals to the bead in a "cabbage"-like" form, overlapping each petal. Repeat until you have four or eight petals glued on.
4) Repeat steps 2 and above, but using dark green crepe paper.
5) Now repeat step 2 and 3, but using pink crepe paper to make the pink petals. You could also use two hues of pink (powder pink and fuchsia, for instance) to add more interest. Keep adding pink petals until you have a full flower. The more petals you add, then fuller and more realistic your flower head will be!
6) Cut some "grass" pieces in the dark green crepe paper and stretch them again like you did for the petal. Twist the ends of the paper to make thin leaves. Hot glue to the underside of each flower to hide the floral tape.
7) The finished flower at the back.
8) The finished flower at the front.
9) Same flower with different colors of crepe paper and less petals.
10) Ponies and ranunculus atop cake.
Directions for the anemone or poppy paper flowers:
1) Copy the same step 1 as used to make ranunculus above.
2) Cut a strip of green crepe paper and make small slits along the longer side. Stretch the paper to make it more realistic like the flower stamen.
3) Hot glue the strip of green crepe paper ("stamen") around the bead.
4) Cut petal shapes in in the crepe paper of choice to make your flower petals. Notice the slight difference in shape from the ranunculus - they're wider at the top and thinner at the base of the petals.
5) Hot glue the petals to the base of the flower center, with the widest part of the petal facing out. Do a row of 4 petals, slightly overlapping them.
6) Repeat step 5 above for one more layer, so your flower will have 8 petals in total. Anemones don't need to be as full as the ranunculus.
Directions for the peony paper flowers:
1) Cut a strip of yellow crepe paper and make small slits along the longer side. Stretch the paper to make it more realistic like the flower stamen. Now twist the ends to make them thin and more like flower stamen.
2) Roll the strip of yellow paper on itself and hot glue to secure in place.
3) Cut the petals in the shape shown, then stretch the paper again to make them look more realistic.
4) Hot glue the petals overlapping them to the yellow "stamen". Repeat until you have a full peony. the more petals you add, the larger and more realistic the flowers head will be.
5) Cut some petals in light and dark green as in previous steps, and hot glue tot he back of the flowers head.
6) Display all the flower, a combination or single blooms on top of your finished cake.
NOTE: (I know you know this, but just in case) Remove flowers before eating! 😀
