September is one of my favorite months. Not only because both my kids were born in September, but because of the cooler days, the beautiful autumnal sights we see in nature and the gorgeous produce we get to enjoy this time of year, like the humble apple!

Apples also symbolize the back to school season, so in its honor, we decided to celebrate by creating a few of apple-themed posts to share with you throughout the month of September - from DIYs to recipes and all in between!

Staring with today's adorable DIY apple zipper pouches! 🍎

Like I said, our first apple-themed posts is this low-sew one (i.e. not much sewing involved, so don't worry) DIY apple zipper pouch project.

These pouches or mini purses are perfect as a teachers gift or to pop in your kid's school backpack to hold coins, small beauty and hair essentials or trinkets!

I love working with felt and think it's such a forgiving material when it comes to sewing, not to mention it's readily available in all craft stores, and doesn't cost a lot.

So felt was my chosen fabric/material for this apple project. Bonus, that I found some on sale at my local craft store! 😉

This apple shaped zipper pouch is super quick to make too, so you can whip up a batch in one afternoon, no problem!

I created a template for these apple zipper pouches that you can download for free here, and also made a quick time-lapse video of the whole process to help you along.

The finished apple zipper pouch is about 12 cm in diameter.

Instructions:

1) Print and cut your apple zipper pouch templates (pieces A to E). Trace the pieces onto a piece of cardboard and cut.

2) Use template (A) to trace the back of the apple pouch on to red felt, then cut once. This is the back of your pouch.

3) Use template (B) to to trace the front of the apple pouch on to red felt, then cut twice. These are the front pieces of your pouch.

4) Place the white zipper in between the two front pieces cut in step 3. Sew a straight line on either side to secure the zipper to the red pieces of felt. This is the front of your pouch.

5) Open the zipper, turn the front piece with the zipper facing down, then place it on top of the back piece (from step 2) and pin in place.

6) Use template (C) to trace your sewing guide on the front of the pouch. Sew the front and back pieces together along the sewing guide lines.

7) Trim off excess felt around the edges of the pouch using pinking shears or scissors.

8) Turn the pouch the right way round.

9) Use templates (D) to cut the "core" of the apple out of white felt. Use template (E) to cut the "seeds" out of brown felt.

10) Glue the apple core and seeds on the front of your pouch. Tie a piece of green ribbon to the zipper to emulate the apple leaf. Glue or add a few stitches to secure the ribbon in place, if desired. Let the pouch dry overnight before using.
