Feta Cheese and Sweet Potato Filo Pastry Samosa Appetizers
Fall is the season for pies, so I thought I'd share these tasty, savory feta cheese and sweet potato samosas or hand-pies, which are the perfect appetizer and ideal for entertaining!
My husband cooks most of the time at our house, so this recipe is originally his, but using spinach instead of sweet potato, 'cause he's not a fan 😲
But because he had forgotten to buy the spinach, I snatched his ingredients to make these delicious feta cheese and sweet potato appetizers, because my kids and I LOVE sweet potatoes!

These feta and sweet potato samosas make for the perfect Fall appetizer, after-school snack, lunchbox treat or light lunch alongside a green salad!
I've actually also made a sweet version of these Indian samosas or hand pies, using figs from my trees and a little brown sugar and cinnamon. My kids went mad for them after school! 😍👍
These feta and sweet potato Samosas are made with Filo pastry and baked in the oven, so they're much lighter and heathier than the traditional deep fried Indian version. But they're still super crunchy and delicious, not to mention easier to make!
For the sweet potato in the filling: I wash the sweet potato, prick it a few times with a fork and bake it in the oven with skin on, for about 20 minutes on 220 deg. C. When the potato is soft and cooled down, I scoop out the flesh and add to my recipe.
Caramelized onions: I added caramelized onions to the mixture and chopped coriander (cilantro) to give the filling extra flavor and texture. You can use a store-bought jar of caramelized onions or onion jam, or make your own. I made my own and added dried herbs to the mixture.
Like I said, these feta cheese and sweet potato samosas are super easy to make, and also happen to be vegetarian.
But you could fill these little parcel or hand pies with any dry mixture you like. For instance, you could use a mixture of ground beef with peas, prawns, chicken or make sweet variations like filling them with pumpkin or chestnut puree, bananas or even chocolate spread! YUM 😍

- Cut the file pastry into 3 lengthways strips. Keep 2 of the strips of pastry covered under a damp tea towel to avoid them drying out.
- Brush one strip of the filo pastry with the melted butter.
- Place a tbsp. of the mixture on one corner of the filo pastry and wrap into triangles to form a samosa.
- Brush the samosa with more butter on both sides, and place it onto a non-stick baking tray.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds or nigella seeds on top, if desired.
- bake at 220 deg. C. for 10-12 minutes.
Notes:
These samosas keep well in a sealed container in the fridge for about 4 days, then place them in the oven before serving to crisp up.
You can also freeze the cooked/uncooked samosas, and bake/re-heat them just before serving.

I haven't had a samosa in a while but I enjoy them a lot. I have never tried cheese samosa and it sounds like a tasty option.
