Fig, Prosciutto Ham and Feta Cheese Pizza

Fig, Prosciutto Ham and Feta Cheese Pizza - easy, quick to make, delicious homemade pizza with seasonal figs for Fall entertaining or weekend brunch! by BirdsParty.com @BirdsParty #recipe #pizza #figs #ham #fetacheese #figrecipe #fallappetizer, thanksgivingappetizer #appetizer

Fig season is upon us, and I couldn't pass up the chance to create a delicious recipe using the figs from my garden. Hence this Fig, Prosciutto ham and Feta cheese pizza!

We've had our fig tree for about 5 years  now. Last year, the fruits were attacked by bugs before we could enjoy them, so I'm mega happy to be able to harvest anything we can this year.

These figs are juicy, plump and super sweet, and although beautiful to eat as is; I decided to add them to a sweet and savory pizza alongside some delicious Prosciutto ham and Feta cheese.

Fig, Prosciutto Ham and Feta Cheese Pizza

This Fig, Prosciutto and Feta Pizza is super tasty, quick and easy to make too! Even if the flavors are quite unusual for a pizza, it's a hit with adults and kids alike!

The sweetness of the figs and caramelized onions marry perfectly with the saltiness of the ham and the creaminess of the Feta cheese. YUM!

Oh, and did I mention the Pesto drizzle at the end? It's THE perfect finishing touch to crown each pizza bite! You could also add a drizzle of honey before serving. Double yum! 😋

This Fig, Prosciutto and Feta Pizza can be whipped up in no time at all, since most of the ingredients are store-bought, so it's a perfect dish to serve up at impromptu brunch or ladies luncheon. Just add a simple green salad on the side and you're good to go!

I like to serve this pizza family-style, on a big wooden board in the center of the table, but you could also cut it up in small bites for a fancy Fall appetizer buffet.

For this particular recipe, I used ingredients and produce that I had on hand, plus a store-bought pizza dough and pesto from a jar. I only made the caramelized onions from scratch. But you could also use a jar of onion jam too to save time.

And of course, if you reeeeeeeally want, you could totally make your own pizza dough and pesto as well.

For the pizza base, I used crème fraiche instead of a traditional tomato based sauce or passata, because I wanted a mild flavor for the base that didn't compete with all the other ingredients.

For the ham, you could basically use any cured or salted ham. The Prosciutto I used was a gift from a friend, so I cut  off some shavings to add to the top of my pizza. The ham does not get overcooked in the oven, but goes a little crispier, and its flavor and saltiness get more concentrated.

You could use Black Forest smoked ham or Parma ham too in place of the Prosciutto. The Feta cheese could also be substituted by goat's cheese or even queso fresco.

An alternative to the Pesto would be to use fresh basil leaves or Arugula leaves just before serving the pizza. I didn't have any of those on hand, that's why I opted for the pesto, which was very delicious and gave a nice pop of green to the pizza!

  • 2 ripe figs, sliced thinly (about 1/2 cm thick)
  • 4 tbsp. crème fraiche
  • 1 small onion, sliced thinly
  • 1 tbsp. cooking oil
  • 1 tsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. dried herbs of your choice (Oregano or Herbs de Provence work well)
  • 3-4 slices of cured ham, torn into bitesize pieces - I used Prosciutto ham, but you can use any cured, smoked ham
  • 2 tbsp. Feta cheese, crumbled
  • 4 tbsp. grated hard cheese like Gouda or Cheddar
  • 1 tbsp. Pesto sauce

Instructions

  1. Add onions, oil and butter to a frying pan. Fry gently on low-medium heat until softened.
  2. Add black pepper and dried herbs and continue to cook until caramelized. Set aside to cool.
  3. Meanwhile, add your pizza dough to a baking tray and spread with the crème fraiche.
  4. Top with the grated hard cheese, caramelized onions, sliced figs and ham slices.
  5. Bake at 250 deg. C. for about 15 minutes or until the dough is cooked and golden at the edges.
  6. Crumble the Feta cheese on top and add a drizzle of pesto sauce while still hot.
