Hey friends, Easter is 'round the corner and I've decided to share with you one of my favorite recipes EVER - Hot cross buns!!
These delicious, lightly spiced sweet bread rolls make for the perfect Easter breakfast, lunch or treat and are quite simple to make too!
I absolutely love eating hot cross buns any time of day though, and this year I tried a new recipe that I just had to share it with you guys, since they turned out SO good!
Hot Cross Buns
Apparently, hot cross buns were an invention of a 14th century English monk. Here's what Wikipedia says:
"A hot cross bun is a spiced sweet bun usually made with fruit, marked with a cross on the top, and has been traditionally eaten on Good Friday.
The bun marks the end of the Christian season of Lent and different parts of the hot cross bun have a certain meaning, including the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spices inside signifying the spices used to embalm him at his burial and may also include orange peel to reflect the bitterness of his time on the Cross."
So in my opinion, this is the perfect treat to bake at Easter, though I'm quite happy to munch on a hot cross bun all year 'round! 😋
These sweet buns do take a while to bake like any bread, since you have to wait for them to prove for 2.5 hours, then another 25-30 minutes to bake. So you can't whip them up in a flash...but they're worth the wait!
Plus, you can also freeze the baked buns wrapped in plastic wrap for up to 3 months, or bake them a few days ahead, so you just pop them in the oven or toaster to warm up on Easter Sunday!
I like to serve my hot cross buns with cheese and jam, but they work well with charcuterie too like salami, cream cheese or other sweet spreads like chocolate, honey or peanut butter!
I have made hot cross buns before using an old English recipe, but this time I tried a recipe by The Recipe Rebel, and I loved it!! The only modification I made to her recipe was to add a bit more cinnamon than required (since my kids and I LOVE cinnamon), and to use vanilla instead of Maple syrup for the glaze, since I can't find it where I live.
Apart from that, her recipe was pretty much spot on, down to the baking time and flour measurements. She also says you can make the dough, do the first rise and roll out the buns the day before. Then let them prove or rise for the second time in the fridge overnight. In the morning, bring them to room temperature just before baking.
I haven't tried doing that, but maybe I will next time in order to speed up the process. I think I'll also add some orange peel (preserved orange) in my next recipe attempt, since I did miss it in the traditional recipe that I was used to baking.
Anyways, these are delicious and I urge you to bake them for Easter! You won't regret it! 🥰
