4th July Desserts Round Up and Recipes
Today I'll show you how you can make these cute little flag cookies, using the same recipe I used for my Watermelon Checkerboard Cookies last year, if you haven't seen them go check them out, they are so fun to make and really great for Summer Parties.
This cookie dough is great to work with, it can be flavored, colored any way you like, it handles well too.
Cookie Dough Recipe:
2 1/2 cups (350 grams) all purpose flour
1 cup (227 grams) unsalted butter room temperature
3/4 cup (150 grams) granulated white sugar
1tbl orange essence or 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1egg
How to make them:
2 bowls with 280 grams of dough and one bowl with 190 grams of cookie dough. These are just approximate numbers.
* I colored one batch of 280 grams with red food coloring, and second one I left uncolored
Small batch I colored with blue food coloring.
* Using 2 painter's sticks as guides I rolled the white and red dough into a rectangle, 5 inches wide and about 9 inches long. I cut it in half, making 2.5 wide strips of dough, at this point I placed both rolled cookie dough strips into the freezer, until firm.
* Blue dough: I rolled into 2 inch rectangle about 9 inch long, cut it in half into a 1 inch stripe and chill until firm. You will have some blue cookie dough left that you can reuse later if needed.
When ready to assemble the cookie, have some water and pastry brush ready, we will brush each layer with water so they stick together.
* Gently brush red cookie strips with water and place white cookie strips on the top, Press slightly.
Now ,cut these in half and you should have 4 strips layered, red and white, in about 1.25 inch wide 9 inches long.
* Cut the blue cookie dough strips in half, forming 1/2 inch wide and about 9 inch long strips.
* Layer strips as shown in the picture, make sure you brush each layer and sides as well with a tiny bit of water so they stick together.
If you have any red and white cookie strips left over, make another blue cookies trip and continue making flag pattern using cookie strips
* Place the block into the freezer , until firm. In needed trim any imperfections.
* Bake at 350F for 5-9 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool.
Finished cookies make a perfect treat for 4th of July celebration, don't you think?
