A Cozy Winter Soup Party Tablescape
January just makes me want get cozy and warm. And for me, there's no better way to celebrate any occasion in winter than with a big bowl of steaming hot soup!
So it got me thinking that a soup party buffet would make a fabulous, and soup-er 😁 easy way to entertain this season!
My family lives on soup in winter, so I set up this cozy winter soup party tablescape with a buffet fit for hosting family, friends and kids at home!
Of course, these ideas are also perfect if you have family or friends over for brunch or for a winter dinner party.
Seriously, there's no cozier theme I'd rather host in winter than a soup party buffet!
A winter soup party offers some really simple and easy decor ideas, and our delicious go-to winter soup recipes (coming next week) are sure to help you host and style a delicious and cozy party at home!
You can make all the soups up to five days in advance and refrigerate, then heat them up on the day, which scores major brownie points in my hostess book.
Not to mention that guests can help themselves to an array of delicious soups, toppings, breads and fixings, and create their own bowl of deliciousness. Talk about coziness, right?! 😍
A Cozy Winter Soup Party - The Tablescape Decor
For this winter soup party, I kept things super simple and set up my buffet directly on the dinner table for a cozy, convivial and practical tablescape.
The buffet tablescape decor was really clean, with muted colors in grey, white and black, and cozy elements like my DIY faux-fur candles and some fluffy cotton branches in lieu of a floral arrangement. Check out the video below for all the details!
The idea is that your table is bountiful enough with all the food on display, and to be honest, after the holidays are over, ain't nobody got time for complicated centerpieces or decor, right?!
Because the lighting in winter is somewhat dim, I also wanted plenty of candles to illuminate our table. But this time, I opted for LED candles because I was hosting kids too, and didn't want any unfortunate accidents.
Plus, these LED candles are super practical to add light without burning guests when they "hover" over the soup buffet to serve themselves. And that can only be a bonus. 😋
For the table dressing, I simply added a grey table runner to my table already covered with a white linen tablecloth. Much like when dressing myself in winter, we want cozy layers!
A Cozy Winter Soup Party - The Place-Settings
Each place setting was then simply adorned with wooden plates for the cozy, earthy aspect and to help serve the breads and side-dishes.
I did think of adding faux-fur place-mats to each place-setting, but when I thought about all the spillages of soup and sticky cheese and crumbs, I decided to keep only the wooden plates! 😉
To finish off, I added black ceramic soup bowls in-keeping with my chosen color palette.
I used mat black flatware to complement the black bowls, and simple and rustic glass mugs for serving hot toddies or water. Of course, you can add more glassware if serving wine at your soup party.
A Cozy Winter Soup Party - The Soup Buffet Menu
For a soup party, I recommend serving at least three different flavored soups to keep the menu interesting.
We served broccoli, carrot and sweetcorn as they are crowd-pleasers and our family's favorite soup flavors and are very easy to make! I'm sharing the recipes on next week's post, so be sure to subscribe to our blog newsletter here to get notified when that post is live!
Since we dispensed the starters, the toppings also had to be varied!
We served grated Emmental cheese, Roquefort cheese, cubed ham, chorizo, jalapenos slices, chopped red onions and crème fraiche.
These toppings have been tried and tested in our home and go great with all the soups we served. But feel free to vary and include the toppings and sides that your family likes best!
For breads, we served olive sticks, wholemeal sliced nut bread and multigrain and seed crackers.
To serve all the toppings, I used mini black bowl to match my soup bowl.
For the breads and soups, I placed a large wooden board on the table center and added a footed wooden stand to raise the soups and make things look a little more interesting.
I also did a little video to share the whole process with you. I hope you like it and find it useful when setting up your soup party buffet at home! 😊

Your ideas are fabulous. I really like using the cutting board to present garnishes.
ReplyDeleteI love serving up soup and chili this way. We had a huge snowshoes and chili party New Years Day, and I provided lots of little bowls of different fixings. It was a big hit!
