This bagel brunch board is a spring brunch version of the charcuterie and cheese boards we're so fond of here on the blog (and all over Pinterest) 😍
How To Build a Bagel Brunch Board
By definition a "food board" is a simple, quick and yet and totally decadent way to serve snacks, appetizers or a cheese course.
So a bagel brunch board should follow in the same easy footsteps, which makes it the perfect last-minute Easter brunch affair for any hostess!
I chose a bagel board for our Easter brunch because bagels rhyme with fresh spring ingredients for me, like smoked salmon, cured hams, boiled eggs, and other brunch/breakfast delights.
A bagel board is not only easy to put together and therefore perfect for last-minute celebrations, but it also feels quite special and indulgent with all that abundant and delicious specialty foods on offer.
I create my bagel brunch board with my family of four in mind, but can make it as large or as small as you like to suit your family dynamics and guests.
You can use one large board to display all the produce, or use a combination of smaller board, and separate the food by groups or by flavors.
Bagel Sandwich Filling Ideas
For a bagel brunch board, you need bagels. Duh.
I chose sesame seed bagels, as I thought they'd complement all the toppings and filling really well, whether savory or sweet (and was the only sort they sold in our French bakery 😋). But again, feel free to add whatever flavors tickle your fancy or that you can find near you.
Next up are the fillings for our "build your own bagel sandwich". Here are some ingredient ideas to help you get started:
* smoked salmon,
* ham,
* boiled, scrambled or poached eggs,
* cream cheese,
* bacon or other charcuterie and dairy products you may like,
* as well as sweet toppings like jam,
* chocolate spread,
* fruit and fruit compotes,
* fresh produce like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, lemon and lime wedges
* and other fixings like capers, flavored salts or herbs.
Again, feel free to add whatever toppings and fixings your family enjoys best with their bagels!
Tips for Building Your Bagel Brunch Board
As you can imagine, there's no real rule for styling or building a bagel board, and that's also the beauty of this type of brunch display. When it comes to the set up of the board itself, your imagination is the only limit!
Having said that, there a few key tips and tricks to making your board look as appetizing and as luscious as all those Pinterest examples!
The only rule of thumb I truly follow when building my brunch bagel board, is to pack my board full to the brim.
A food board with empty spaces just looks wrong and doesn't feel as indulgent, and that defeats the point of the whole board situation, right?!
So, I start layering my board with the flat leaves around the outside to frame the board, in this case I used baby gem lettuce. But you could use any greens you like.
When I'm setting up a charcuterie or cheese board, I like to start with fig leaves to frame my board. So as you can see, anything goes.
Then I add the main attraction, in this case, the bagels.
I then proceed to add the larger food products or ingredients, making sure to separate them a bit on the board so the flavors don't get mixed up between them. For instance, I place the fish on one side and the charcuterie on the opposite far side of the board.
On my board, I opted for cream cheese (plain and herb and garlic options) as it's so versatile for both savory and sweet fillings, but you could also add any cheese of your preference here.
Then all that's left to do is to fill the gaps on the board with tomatoes, red onions, lemon and lime slices, herbs and capers.
I used my cute Easter bunny egg-cups to hold the capers, since this is meant to be served at Easter brunch, and I love how it turned out!
