Lemon Decorated Sugar Cookies
Following on from our lemon themed party, today I'm sharing the super pretty, but oh-so-easy-to-make lemon decorated cookies I made for that event.
Sugar decorated cookies is another of my passions, but as much as I love a detailed cookie design, most often I'll try to simplyfy the techniques to make the decorating part more fun (and quicker)! 😉
Lemon Decorated Sugar Cookies
So for this lemon party I didn't want a super intricate design, and wanted to use a cookie cutter we all have at home for extra simplicity.
After a lot of research on Pinterest, I came across this round lemon slice decorated cookie by Sweetopia, and I knew I was onto a winner!
Marian's technique is also super simple and involves just two royal icing colors to achieve the super adorable lemon shape. Score!
For the cookie recipe, I used my go-to sugar cookie recipe and added lemon extract for the flavor.
For the royal icing, again, I used my standard recipe, which I colored yellow for the lemon this time.
I've shared both cookie and frosting recipes here on the blog on numerous occasions - Search "cookies" to see all our designs!

Lemon Decorated Sugar Cookies - easy recipe for a lemon shaped sweet treat that's perfect for a lemon themed wedding, birthday or summer party!
ingredients:
Sugar Cookies Recipe Ingredients
- 1 cup of room temperature butter (not margarine)
- 1 ½ cups icing sugar (confectioner's/powdered sugar)
- 1 egg
- Few drops lemon extract
- 2 and 3/4 cups of flour
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of salt
Royal Icing Recipe Ingredients
- 1 pound of confectioner sugar sifted (icing sugar)
- 3 pasteurized egg whites
- 1 teaspoon of fresh lime juice
- yellow gel food coloring
instructions:
How to cook Lemon Decorated Sugar Cookies
Basic Sugar Cookies Recipe Instructions
- In a mixer fitted with paddle attachment, mix the butter and sugar until creamy.
- Add egg and extract and mix until combined.
- In a separate bowl add flour, baking powder and salt. Mix, then add slowly to the butter bowl with mixer on low. Mix until all the flour is well combined. The dough is ready when most of it sticks to the paddle...but when touched it does not stick to my fingers. So add a little more flour if needed to achieve this consistency.
- Roll out the dough onto parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thick. Add flour to your rolling pin to stop it sticking.
- Cut out the circles with a 2 inch (5 cm) round cookie cutter and place on baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 400 deg F (200 deg C) for 7-8 minutes.
- Let cookies cool down on the tray before handling, otherwise they'll be soft and will crumble. Once completely cool, decorate with royal icing as per recipe below.
Royal Icing Recipe Instructions
- In a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, add sifted sugar, egg white and lime juice and mix on low until sugar fully combined.
- Continue to mix on medium-high speed until stiff peaks are formed.
- Once you have stiff peaks, transfer the icing to two separate bowls to be colored. Add a little yellow food coloring to one bowl and mix.
- Immediately transfer the icing to two separate bowls: The white into a piping bag fitted with a #2 round piping tip, and the yellow into a piping bag fitted with a large round tip or simply snip the end of the piping bag. PS - I use the same icing consistency to outline and fill my cookies.
- Start by outlining and filing the lemon cookie with the yellow icing.
- Shake cookie from side to side to smooth out the icing. TIP: Get rid of any "peaks" or bubbles in the icing by wetting your finger a little and pressing them down gently or using a metal skewer.
- Immediately pipe a circle of white icing around the outer edge of the cookie, then add a dot of white icing in the center.
- Using a metal skewer or toothpick, draw lines from the outer edge of the cookie to the inner white circle in the center to form the lemon segments. Draw eight lines in total.
