This summer I've been making a lot of treats as you can probably tell from aaaall the recipe posts I've been sharing here on the blog 😋
And this tres leches (three milks) ice cream has become my go-to, easy treat to serve on its own or to accompany any dessert (think pies, cakes, fruit salad etc.).
This milky and creamy ice cream recipe only requires 3 ingredients, which you probably already have at home, and NO ice cream machine in sight! 👍
My kids love ice cream and frozen treats, so naturally, I've been making my own at home to satisfy their hungry appetites during the summer break.
But I think this ice cream flavor would be perfect for any season. I'm particularly excited to pair it with pies, tarts, cobblers, crumbles and warm sauces during the coming colder months!
I've never actually made ice cream before because I don't have an ice cream machine, and most recipes call for one. But when I saw this no-churn recipe from my friend Leah at Freutcake, it got me in the mood to try!
Basically, a no-churn ice cream is one that is just as creamy and delicious as traditional ice cream, but requires no machine or no churning while it cools. So you can make it quite simply and quickly and let the freezer do its magic!
This idea of no-churn ice cream is nothing new. If you've ever had Indian Kulfi, then you've already had no-churn ice cream. But I had no idea that you could make it with any fruit or create your own flavors like chocolate chip, Dulce de Leche or in this case, Tres Leches!
For my particular recipe, I skipped the fruit altogether because I wanted to create a really versatile ice cream flavor to have on its own with toppings, or to serve with any other dessert.
Vanilla was the first choice, but not very original...so I decided to make a tres leches version. This tres leches ice cream gets its name from the fact that you use three different types of milk, or milk in three forms; to make it - condensed milk, cream and powdered milk.
There is a very popular Mexican tres leches cake, which is the inspiration for this ice cream flavor!
I really like the subtle flavors here and think it goes really well with fruity desserts or a nice light coulis in summer. I served it with some crumbled ice cream wafers on top for added crunch and inside store-bought, edible wafer bowls that are chocolate-dipped! 😋
In winter or colder months, this ice cream would be perfect paired with a slice of pie, a brownie, or a hot butterscotch sauce. YUM!
The ice cream recipe itself is super simple and easy to make, and if you make it in the morning, you'll have a delicious dessert ready for dinner time!
