A Seaside Inspired Tablescape and 3 BBQ Recipes
Summer rhymes with BBQ and eating outdoors, so we've been cooking most of our evening meals on the BBQ this summer. It's a bliss not to have the oven on inside the house, and somehow, food just tastes so much better al-fresco, don't you think?
So a few weeks ago, we decide on a baked version of the classic shrimp boil. But because it's cooked on a sheet pan on the barbecue...we called it BBQ shrimp.
A Seaside Inspired Tablescape
This table decor only took me a couple of hours to style, which is far from the detailed tablescapes I spend literally days planning here for the blog! 😬
But I also know that we don't always have days to plan ahead for a dinner party, so hopefully it will inspire you for your next last-minute soiree too, or even for a low-key 4th of July celebration at home!
Once I knew we were doing a shrimp bake on the BBQ, I immediately thought of a seaside inspired theme for the table decor.
So as with all my tablescapes, I started shopping my home and props room for themed decor pieces (like the nautical accessories, metal buckets and gold lobsters), linens and tableware to match my party vision. You could even use some of the DIY decor pieces we made last week to dress your nautical table!
In the end, I used a navy table cloth, rattan chargers and simple white plates. For a pop of color, I added light blue starter plates and red napkins.
To complement each place-setting, I opted for everyday silver flatware, blue water goblets and simple wine glasses.
I also quickly whipped up a printable menu card with seaside designs, which helped to finish off each place setting perfectly!
Because this was a very informal dinner party, for the table centerpiece I simply arranged some white faux flowers into three galvanized metal buckets. I love the mix of the different metals and texture on this table, and how easy this centerpiece was to style!
In-keeping with the seaside theme, I used little wooden fish on top of each menu card to help keep them from flying off in the wind. These fish were actually from a nautical garland I had at home, which I picked apart.
I used the fish to decorate the place-settings, and re-purposed the rest of the garland as seaside-themed coasters under the water glasses 😉
To finish off the decor, I added a couple of gold lobsters and white and gold lanterns alongside the flower buckets.
It was such a simple touch that helped to bring the whole seaside theme together so effortlessly!
The BBQ Menu
For this very impromptu BBQ, my husband and I wanted easy recipes that packed a punch flavor-wise. So we opted for cooking it all on a sheet pan over the fire, so as to retain all the pan juices and flavors.
For our BBQ shrimp recipe, we were inspired by the traditional shrimp boil for the ingredients. So we used shrimp, smoked and spicy Spanish chorizo (closest think we could find to Andouille sausage in France), corn-on-the-cob and potatoes.
This was such a fun, easy and mega tasty way to BBQ, and I can't wait try it again!
We basically cooked the sausage and the precooked corn pieces together on tray. Then added the raw shrimp and my scrumptious shrimp boil butter right at the very end.
The shrimp boil butter was a totally made-up concoction of mine, inspired by a shrimp boil dressing. It turned out so delicious that we sprinkled it all over the potatoes too. But I think you could use it on top of most barbecued meats and veggies too!
We also par-boiled the potatoes then cooked it on on a separate tray. Then we added it into the shrimp tray at the very last minute.
To accompany our shrimp BBQ, we served my husband's super simple, but delicious coleslaw.
I also made a refreshing Hibiscus iced tea (recipe coming soon) and served my mom's passion fruit mousse for dessert. Both were big hits with the kids and the grown-ups alike!
