If you're on Instagram you probably would have seen that drip cakes are taking over the cake world right now. Well, ever since I've set eyes on them, I've been itching to bake one!
So for our flamingo pool party (see photos here), I decided to get baking. It turns out, not only drip cakes are not that difficult to make and taste super yum, but they will totally steal the show on any desserts table! :)
There's nothing more gratifying than tucking into a beautiful and delicious cupcake for any occasion:
- Is it your birthday? Yay, this calls for cupcakes!
- Have you passed your driving test? Yay, this calls for cupcakes!
- Got engaged? We need cupcakes!
- Got dumped? Definitely a call for cupcakes!
So you see, baking the perfect cupcake should totally be on everyone's bucket list, 'cause you're bound to need them at some point in life ;)
Following on from yesterday's Santa inspired post, I thought I'd share the DIY for the cupcakes I made to match my Christmas Candyland desserts table.
I used sugar paste fondant and printable toppers to decorate the cupcakes. It's not rocket science - more like playing with modelling clay! :)

Truth be told, I (Tess) have not always been a cake gal. As a child, I would have surely picked ice cream over sheet cake.
My tastes have certainly changed over the years, but I will always have a huge sweet tooth. I love and work in pastry and I most definitely have my chocolate-craving days, but sometimes I just want some good old fashion candy.

If you would have seen my (Tess) face yesterday as we drove out of the city and into the country for the afternoon, you would have thought the barrister slipped in a little something extra into my London Fog. On our way out the the pumpkin farm, the high-rises of our neighborhood were quickly replaced with row after row of golden-leafed trees.
Maybe it's because I've lived in the city for a while now, but I had no idea I could ever be so excited about fall foliage. The beautiful colors of fall were captured in these Fall Leaf Mini Cakes.
Well, fear no longer! When it comes to determining serving size and how to slice into a beautiful cake with confidence, I've got you covered.
So you want to cover a cake in fondant. Now what? Well, it might not be as scary as you might think. After all, it's just cake and sugar - not brain surgery ;)
There are certainly mixed feelings when it comes to fondant. I am not sure if this is because people find it difficult to use, it does not look as "yummy" as fluffy buttercream, it tastes funny, or whatever. In my humble opinion, there will always be a place for fondant. Maybe not for every event or design, but it is certainly worth giving a try. It may take practice to handle efficiently, but it yields beautiful, smooth results - even producing designs that cannot be achieved with any other medium.
Bridal Showers and Wedding Inspiration Cake it Pretty HGTV 10:09 AMC Riches
I'm no professional baker, so the thought of making a DIY wedding cake for my latest project for HGTV was a little daunting. But then I realized that with anything homemade, the beauty is in the "journey" as much as in the final product.
So I went with a less is more approach. Basic pound cake, simply frosted with vanilla cream cheese frosting (thanks to all the masterclasses in Caking it Pretty!).
The cake really is so simple to decorate and I've already showed how I made the fondant strawberries here. So all that's left to do is the fondant pearl border and the ribbon bunting.
Nearly a decade ago, I (Tess) enrolled in a watercolor class during summer school at my university. I've always considered myself to be a fairly crafty and artistic person, but let me tell you - watercolor painting is HARD!
Making simple designs and blending colors was fun and sort of relaxing, but the detail and artistry that my instructor and some of my fellow classmates used was phenomenal. Needless to say, I knew I was not going to improve all that much in just a short amount of time. However, I definitely left inspired and with a tremendous amount of respect for those that could create beautiful imagery with only a few tools.

We 're starting the week on a super sweet note, and giving you not one, but THREE nautical cake decorating ideas using sugar paste fondant - courtesy of our resident cake designer extraordinaire, Tessa Lindow Huff.
Tessa created a trio of cakes for issue 8 of Birds' Party Magazine, based on our Nautical Party Printables, and any (or all three) would be a perfect focal point to your nautical desserts table - Plus they are so easy to decorate too, which is always a bonus in my book! Check out Tessa's step-by-step below:

As promised in my last post, I'm sharing the step-by-step tutorial on How To Make a Toadstool Cake today! I've always wanted to bake a toadstool cake, and styling our Pixie Fairy Party gave the perfect opportunity to head to the kitchen and get a little creative and adventurous.
Now, I feel I need to add a little disclaimer here, to let you know I'm no professional baker and this was my total invention and first time making a toadstool cake. But hopefully it also shows that if I can do it (and super easily, I may add), then anyone can too! ;)
Hello fellow cake makers!! I am excited to share some quick tips to take your plain, buttercream cakes to the next level. Although I highly encourage learning how to create a smooth buttercream finish, adding textures is an easy way to change up the appearance of an ordinary cake.

Along our journey, I (Tess) will teach how to create beautifully decorated and iced cakes. We will experiment with rolled fondant, textured buttercream, and piped details. But for today, let's start with basics of How To Ice a Cake.
Now, before we get into some decorating and assembly tips and tricks, I would like to set you up with some classic or Classic Cake and Icing Recipes from my own kitchen - Believe me, if you start with a stable icing and a crumb with good structure, the sometimes-daunting decorating process will be much easier!
